August 11th is my late beloved grandmother's birthday, and I always celebrate on this day with a big pot of her family recipe for Italian pasta sauce. But I do have to make a confession: until recently I didn't realize Nana really wasn't a great cook. She was brought up, along with her eight brothers and sisters, to cook a few simple dishes well, and that's what she cooked for most of her life. But these few dishes are all beloved, because we all grew up eating them and she always made and served them with love and care. And that's why I still never order Italian when I go out to eat, because even though it's fancier than this, it will never compare with Nana Pacitto's Italian pasta sauce.
